There's no right or right to judging a poem. I believe that a poem shows a person's writing style and the uniqueness that they have. This can go for any type of writing. But I'm not saying that I can't do that writing paper assignments for classes, but I rather do something that is not required of me. Also something about writing that gets me going is after writing a good paper, I'm able to showcase it and be proud of my work. Often times I like to peer review what others have written. I will have to say that I enjoy blogging and writing outside of the college life because I am able to show my writing abilities. I put well over 16 hours of work into a huge research paper that I did my first year of college and I loved every minute of it! I don't like writing academically. (And thankfully with college being over with I won't have to.) I like writing from the heart, and that has gotten me in trouble at times. But I pride myself in being honest and straight forward. I've also tried my hand at fiction but I don't think I'm really good at it. I feel like a lot of it is just "fluff" instead of substance.
